ReadComics Podcast #050 – Cons and stuff

April 24th, 2011 by Martin

In this unstructured podcast, Susie, Marty, Jason and Florence start out by talking briefly about the science fiction convention they all attended this weekend, Minicon, and jump from there to talking about comic book conventions in general and specific. (MCBA‘s SpringCon is right around the corner!) We then discuss the Elfquest fan trailer.

Marty grills Jason’s encyclopedic knowledge of Doctor Who for details and history of Doctor Who comics, and then we discuss The Ten Doctors and the Torchwood Babiez. Jason mentions in passing that there is a podcast about Doctor Who comics. Maybe he’ll post a link in the comments, or you could start your search for it at the Doctor Who Podcast Alliance. We make sure Jason plugs his daily doctor who blog over at Doctor Who Every Day.

Much ado is made about the forthcoming Wonder Woman TV atrocity.

ReadComics Podcast #049 – Book Club #19 – So Super-Duper

November 7th, 2010 by Martin

This book club podcast about the first ten issues of the comic book So Super Duper features Marty, Florence, Jason, Angela, and Susie. We talk about our impressions of the comic.

“So Super Duper” is a cute story about a character named Psyche, a new-ish Super Hero who isn’t quite as super as everyone else on his team. Psyche slowly discovers that his lack of superheroness may not be the only thing that is different about him.

Dream Casting, Sandman Casting Call Part 3: Death Wish List

September 20th, 2010 by Susie

In part 1, I gave my reasons for embarking on this project.  In part 2 I cast my Dream.  Now it is time put my casting cap back on, and pick an actress for the role of Death.  In the universe of the Sandman Death is an upbeat, very cute, goth girl.  As with all the Endless, her appearance changes, depending on her surroundings.

However, she is one of the more consistent of them.  Her clothing does change according to the era, but for the most part, she is thin, pale, dressed all in black, with black hair, that is only slightly less messy than Dream’s.  She always wears an ankh, somewhere on her person, usually as a necklace.  And she has a black curlicue, under one eye.  She is most often seen wearing a black tank, and black jeans, and occasionally finishes it off with a top hat, and umbrella.

She is the most relatable, down to earth, member of the Endless, and she is probably the series’ most beloved character.  She is also the character that I have had the most trouble casting.  She has to be instantly likable, and yet formidable.  She has to be both glib, and insightful.  I kept coming up with actresses that worked in one aspect, and failed in another.  Natalie Portman, is cute enough, but I’m not sure she’d be able to convey the character’s power.  Angelina Jolie could cover the power, but is too intimidating.  Amy Adams, too cute, no edge at all.  Death had to be all of that and more.  She has to be someone who you’d actually be happy to see at your final moment.  I went back and forth.  I think I’ve finally got it.  Summer Glau

She is probably best known for her roles on two short lived Scifi series.  She played Cameron, a cyborg assassin, on The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  And on Firefly, she played River, a brilliant, psychologically damaged, young girl, made into a sleeper agent by the government.  She was so good at portraying River’s insanity, while also showing her vulnerability, and under lying danger, that I was considering her as the top contender for the part of Delirium.  But I felt that actually might be like casting her in the same part, especially since there is a big overlap in the audiences for Firefly, and Sandman.  Then as I was crossing out another name to play death, I remembered the charm, Glau brought to the role of River.  The fact that she moved with a preternatural grace.  The way she could deliver the strangest non sequitur, in way that made you think it would make perfect sense if you were just inside her head.  Most of all, the looks she gave to her big brother when he was being an idiot, would translate perfectly into the, affectionate yet exasperated, way Death relates to Dream.

Look at her here, imagine it as a top hat, and that’s our girl.

It doesn’t hurt that she bears a slight resemblance to Fairuza Balk.  Who at one point, I’m not sure if it’s still the case, had been set to play the part, in the film adaptation of Death the Time of Your Life.  Which was a spinoff miniseries of Sandman.  Considering the film was set to be directed by Neil Gaiman, it would be fair to say Fairuza is his top choice.

However, as popular as Summer may be with the geek community, it may be necessary to pick a bigger name, to get the movie made.  So under duress I would submit my next choice.  Zooey Deschanel.

She has been the winsome, indie, girl next door with an edge, du jour, for the past couple of years.  For good reason, she’s charming, and beautiful, and talented.  She’d be very good for the part, I just like Summer Glau a little bit more.

Coming up in part three, Delirium!

ReadComics Podcast #044 – Bookclub #17 – Runaways

July 23rd, 2010 by Martin

This month we talked about Runaways, the early issues, written by Brian K. Vaughan. We had Florence and Marty, Jason, Angela, Susie, and our neighbors David and Alexis. You may also hear random babbling from Colleen (4 months) and Ruby (8 months). This was more of an introduction to the series for Angela, David, and Alexis, who hadn’t read any of it before. The rest of us reminisce about way back when we read ’em the first time.

We also decided on our next book club, when we’ll be discussing Hellboy, the 1st TPB, by Mike Mignola.

March 28th, 2010 by Martin

This podcast is an episode of the ReadComics Book Club where we talk about the first four issues of The Books of Magic #1-4, the issues written by Neil Gaiman. Tangents abound, of course, and other topics include: various other Vertigo titles (Sandman, of course), Harry Potter comparisons, and “annotated” versions of comic books (Watchmen, Grant Morrison, Crisis on Infinite Earths). We hadn’t read (or known about) David Goldfarb’s Books of Magic annotations until mid-podcast. Enjoy!

ReadComics Podcast #041 – Bookclub #14 – The Unwritten #1-5

February 7th, 2010 by Martin

This episode of the ReadComics Podcast is Florence, Jason, Mike, Marty and Susie discussing The Unwritten issues #1-5 (the first arc). We go off on tangents about meta-fiction (including Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series, Fables, and The Magicians by Lev Grossman), and talk about The Unwritten‘s obvious comparisons to Harry Potter and Books of Magic. We do spoil these early issues, so you’ll want to stay away if you mind that. They’re well worth reading, so go pick up the TPB if you haven’t already!

ReadComics Podcast #040 – Bookclub #13 – Wonderful Wizard of Oz

November 22nd, 2009 by Martin

No introduction can describe what will follow in this podcast. Mike says: “Listen, and godspeed.” Jason says: “Listen and god help you.”

This is actually only fifteen minutes of podcast #40, and the rest is podcast #41, since we lost everything of the first podcast after a hard-drive write-error. Mike, Jason, Susie, Florence and Marty all read and discussed the recent Marvel adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by Eric Shanower and drawn by Skottie Young.

ReadComics Podcast #039 – Bookclub #12 – Echo

September 23rd, 2009 by Martin

Yet another fascinating and tantalizing podcastical tribute to comics! This book club issueissode focused on the awesome Echo, by veteran comic creator Terry Moore.

Marty, Florence, Mike, Jason and Susie wax your ears off with unquestionable eloquence, only straying satirically from the subject for brief but satisfying interludes. (We’re segue savants, so of course you probably won’t even notice.) This episode is best enjoyed in the company of a well trained room full of monkeys with typewriters.

ReadComics Podcast #038 – Bookclub #11 – American Born Chinese & The Eternal Smile

August 16th, 2009 by Martin

This book club episode of the podcast was composed of the melodic and intellectual voices of Marty, Florence, Mike, Jason, and of course the disembodied Susie, whose choice it was to read American Born Chinese & The Eternal Smile, by Gene Luen Yang (with Derek Kirk Kim on The Eternal Smile). Both books are well worth a read, and we go into great detail about their plots and allegories and meanings contained therein. As with all our bookclub episodes, it’ll be a more entertaining listen if you’ve already read the books in question. Feel free to leave your own commentary and opinions in the comments.

We talked for quite a while tonight, but surprisingly, it never felt like there was a lull in the discussion.
